Systems That Work

People should not have to fight systems just to belong.

Australia is entering one of the biggest reform and transition periods in decades.

Systems That Work is a national movement and reform platform focused on ensuring systems are safe, accountable and genuinely work in practice — before people are expected to rely on them.

Because:

If systems aren’t ready, reform isn’t ready.

Change the system, not the person.

Too often, people are expected to carry the burden of systems that are:

  • fragmented
  • disconnected
  • difficult to navigate, and
  • not designed for human difference.

After years of reviews, consultations and promises of change, many people fear systems are again changing faster than safeguards are being built around them.

Systems That Work exists to help ensure reform improves lives in practice — and that no one is left behind during transition.

Too many people are forced to live between systems.

Expected to fit systems that are not designed for them — while being told they are not eligible for the supports they need.

People should not have to fight systems just to participate in everyday life.

If systems aren’t ready, reform isn’t ready

Reform should not be measured by how many people leave systems.

It should be measured by whether people experience better lives afterwards.

When systems work, people thrive.

This movement is not about stopping reform.

It is about building systems that:

  • improve participation
  • strengthen inclusion
  • reduce long-term exclusion
  • support families
  • and create better outcomes in practice.

Because better systems create better lives.

When systems work for Autistic people, they work better for everyone

Autistic people often experience system failure first and most visibly.

That is why autism provides an important systems design lens for understanding whether systems genuinely work in practice.
